A healthy diet and diabetes

A proper diet is the basis for a healthy lifestyle, potentially minimising the likelihood of contracting some chronic diseases.  Poor nutrition and diet can contribute to a variety of conditions including obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

There are a variety of ways of maintaining a healthy diet, including some diets which have been scientifically proven to prevent the onset of chronic disease and other conditions.

An example of such a diet is the Cretan Mediterranean diet, which was first described by Ancel Keys and colleagues in the 1960s.  This important study showed that people from the Island of Crete in Greece had the lowest rate of death from heart disease compared with other countries in the study and this protection from heart disease was due to their diet.

Many other studies since the 1960s have shown the benefits of the traditional Cretan mediterranean diet for protection from many chronic disaeases and promoting longevity.
